Job Description - Communications Manager

1              Job title:              Communications Manager

2              Context:

Science City Bristol Ltd is a company, limited by guarantee, owned by its members, who are the Universities of Bath, Bristol and the West of England.  Its purpose is to deliver a specific portfolio of activity and to champion the further development of the Science City Bristol initiative.  This includes a wider set of activities which may be identified as part of Science City Bristol, but are not the specific responsibility of Science City Bristol Ltd.  Its Terms of Reference define the purpose of Science City Bristol as:

“…support and develop the area's science and innovation assets to deliver sustainable economic and social benefit by:

             Bringing business, academia and government together;

             Creating a more connected scientific community;

             Promoting the area's scientific achievements to help us attract even more world-leading scientific enterprise and research;

             Creating a culture for all which understands and celebrates science and technology.”

This post reports to the Director of Science City Bristol Ltd.

3              Location:

The job is based at the Science City Bristol Ltd office in the Bristol and Bath Science Park, Dirac Crescent, Bristol BS16 7FR.

4              Basic terms and remuneration

This is a part-time post, covering 2 days per week (0.4 full time equivalent) and will be a fixed term contract for 9 months, reflecting the current availability of funding for Science City Bristol Ltd.  Specific hours worked will be by agreement, but will include some attendance at events outside of normal office hours.

The salary will be in the region of £10,000 per annum (£25,000 per annum full time equivalent) depending upon the skills and expertise of the post holder.

The post holder is entitled to 10 days paid holiday per annum.  

NB  Funding for Science City Bristol Ltd does not currently allow for the payment of additional benefits, such as employer pension contributions.

5              Overall job purpose

To initiate and deliver a range of communications and public relations activities to raise the profile of science and technology activity in the Bristol city region and of Science City Bristol; and to support delivery of SCB activities including BEN and Venturefest Bristol. 

6              Responsibilities and objectives

1            To develop and deliver a plan for communications activities within the limited resources available, working with the Director of Science City Bristol and the Network Director.  To provide communications and marketing support for the delivery of specific activities, particularly BEN and Venturefest Bristol.

2            To generate and maintain content for the SCB websites and  newsletters so that this is up-do-date and attracts and retains visitors.  To be proactive in generating press releases and other PR material to raise the profile of SCB; and of science and technology activities in the city region.

3            To maximise the use of social media to raise the profile of Science City Bristol among the science and technology community. This will include encouraging contributions of user generated content from this audience.

4            To support the development of case studies and other material to raise the profile of Bristol as a location for technology based businesses; and to support other organisations in marketing Bristol as a location for high-growth businesses and talented individuals.

5             To development and maintain knowledge and understanding of the science and technology strengths (business and academic) in the Bristol city-region in order to support the activities of Science City Bristol. 

6             To represent Science City Bristol Ltd at external meetings and events, communicating the vision for Science City Bristol and championing science and technology in the city region more widely.

7            To build and maintain relationships with external partners and stakeholder organisations across the city region; particularly with potential funders.  To support activities aimed at winning sponsorship for Science City Bristol activities.  This will include the production of an annual report on SCB Ltd activities.

8            To manage external contracts for communications activities.  

9            To undertake the duties of the post at all times with full regard to Science City Bristol Ltd’s Equality and Diversity policy.

10          To carry out any other duties commensurate with the post, as required.

 

7              Person specification

 

             Relevant experience in communications and public relations in the public or private sector; and a good understanding of marketing activities including internet and social media. 

             Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly at all levels, present ideas and sell concepts.

             Good computer literacy, including the use of Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with the use of a web content management systems (CMS) such as WordPress; and experience of InDesign or equivalent software.

             Well organised, with good attention to detail; the ability to work under pressure, manage conflicting priorities and deliver to deadlines.

             Able to work closely and flexibly within a small team to achieve shared objectives

             Experience of managing relationships with external partners.  Good networking skills and the ability to build partnerships and alliances to meet shared objectives.

             Some understanding of science, technology and innovation activity in private or public   sector environment.

             Full driving licence
