Pure Ability Ltd

Pure Ability When Ian Anderson of Pure Ability Ltd broke his neck eight years ago in a road traffic accident, it meant he had to change his job, his home and his car, whilst adjusting to a life in a chair. He decided that the best way to tackle this was with a change of trade and applied for a computing degree course at the University of the West of England. On completion he applied to do a PhD in the field of mobile and wearable computing at Bristol University.

After becoming increasingly aware of the applicability of mobile and wearable computing technology as a means of addressing some of the issues he faced as a wheelchair user, Ian decided to go into business and entered the 2006 Bristol New Enterprise Competition which he and two colleagues went on to win. Since this, Sensagest - an innovative nurse call system, activated by tiny movements on a fabric pad - has gone onto to win Best Patient Independence Innovation in addition to the overall prize in the Bone and Joint Innovation Awards at the prestigious Medical Futures Innovation Awards 2007.
